GLSEN Southern Maine strives to ensure a safe school environment for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
GLSEN-Southern Maine is a chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, a national education organization making schools safer for ALL students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Founded in 1996, GLSEN-Southern Maine (based in Portland) and Downeast GLSEN (based in Ellsworth) respond to students and families in need and consult with school staff. These two Maine GLSEN chapters provide resources and support for Gay-Straight-Trans Alliances in about half of Maine's high schools and in every county but one. GLSEN Southern Maine provides monthly regional educational programs for GSTA youth and advisors, supports youth leadership development through a regional GSTA Student Leadership Team of GSTA leaders from many high schools, offers professional development for school faculty/staff and other community professionals, and partners with several organizations to achieve laws and policies to protect LGBTQ students, staff and families in Maine's K-12 schools.
